I'm going through a family member's collection making sure nothing big has been missed... How should I handle these raw coins? handkerchief? Buy some gloves? invest in a remote-controlled coin handling/photographing robot? (okay, I was kidding about the last one... those things leave greasy tracks on the carpet)

Thanks for any pointers.

First off, always handle with clean hands and by the edge. Never touch the surface of the coin. Always handle them over a soft surface (just in case you should drop it) and away from your face. You can also purchase white cotton gloves sold for the purpose of handling coins.

"away from your face" is that to avoid condensation from my breath? (Thanks, those are exactly the kind of things I don't want to have to learn the hard way!!)

You left out a lot of information.
Exactly what do you mean by going through them?
What did you mean by nothing missed?
Are you attempting to ascertain a value for someone?
Some so called coin collections are just a lot of common, every day coins from circulation. Of course even then there is some care since you don't want to be the one leaving fingerprints, grease, spit, etc on someone else's property.
Mainly if those coins are just common, every day coins from circulation, not a fantastic amount of care is really required.
Contrary though is in case some of the coins, many of them, or a majority are true collector types, much care should be implimented. Cotton gloves are not really required but if you are not a carefull person, they should be considered.
1. Don't allow the raw coins to bang against each other
2. Don't drop them on anything hard
3. Never place your fingers directly on the face or reverse
4. Do not place any of the coins on a service you are not sure is clean
5. Do not attempt to clean, wipe, spit, rub, pick at any of those coins
Again though I'm not sure what you are doing this for. Always be carefull handling others coins or anything of value. Especially any item that is small and could be pocketed. Not that I mean you would but this is something that always is suspect when someone is playing around with someone else's valuable property. By this I mean what ever your doing for someone with coins, make sure they are present. NEVER accept doing something with someone else's valuables unless they are right there. You may not think so but this is really a great reason for family, friends, neighbors, etc. problems.

You have been given some great suggestions above ..... live by them and you should be fine.

FWIW .... here are my thoughts as a relative newbie to the hobby ....

For everyday roll searching I just use my hands and spill the coins out on a soft towel placed on my desk.

I also have started a collection of Classic US Commemoratives ..... expensive silver coins in MS state.

For these ..... I put on a pair of disposable latex gloves (the kind your doctor uses when he checks your ..... uhhhhmmm ... you know) ..... and take every possible precaution against banging, dropping, etc as suggested above by just carl.

HTH ... and

Well, in the immediate, there are several rolls in plastic tubes that we believe are junk silver. I'm planning to scan for key dates and then look for a buyer for the rest. Other parts of the collection do have some pieces worthy of grading.

Thanks for all the help

This may sound funny but if you have to cough or sneeze, turn your head away from the coins.

yes if you cough or sneeze move away when you inhale because you might suck the coin inside.

isn't that where the curse of the mummy came from?

Thanks for the tips, guys. Every time I get into something "new" I usually make some ridiculous rookie mistake, so the reminder to "turn and cough" does not fall on deaf ears.

Just a hint too, coins are kid magnets...

...yet they find a way of dropping them?!?

Whenever my niephews or nieces are visiting I make sure my desk is clear of the good stuff.

But handing them some wheaties or old buffalos just may get them into neumismatics, which afterall is how this hobby continues on.

I've mentioned this every time anyone says they are doing anything with someone else's coins. And if from a family member, I hope you have a really great, trustworthy family. By this I mean I've seen to many arguaments, rumors, dissagreements and family members no longer speaking to each other due to situations of money in the family. If your handling someone else's property and it is small enough to be pocketed, you will always be suspect in pocketing the expensive ones. And after you finish, some day in the future you should buy a new car, everyone in the family will know where you got the money. And regardless if you say it's all worth a thousand dollars, you will always be suspect in attempting to lower the real value so you can get your hands on those coins for practically nothing.
Hopefully you know what your doing and have a really trustworthy family.
