Technically, it is a doubled die but it is master die doubling so it affects a large number of 1972s and hence not collectible. Master dies are used to make the working hubs which make the working dies so this doubling was transferred to literally hundreds of dies. Collectible doubled die varieties can be traced to an individual working die.
Looking at the OP's coin, it does NOT appear to be the master die doubling shown in a later post. It's still not a doubled die, but it looks like what would be one of the normal coins for the issue.
There are 1972D doubled dies out there to be had - just keep your eyes peeled!
