Hello,

I recently bought a folder and several Eisenhower dollars from a coin show. I'm not so much concerned about what I paid for the coins because they weren't very pretty but I'm wanting to complete this collection and the only coins I can find are BU coins that are very nice. I do not want to place BU coins in a folder though. I have this thing where if I purchase nice BU coins I'd like to keep them nice so I'll buy a nice album but on the other hand if I have circulated or not very nice looking uncirculated coins I do not want to spend the money and buy a nice album when a folder is cheaper.

My dilemma is this collection is mixed. I suppose I could place what I have in the folder and call it good but incomplete cutting my losses and take it as a learning experience and then start an all BU collection and buy a nice album. I'm torn.....

Get the album and put what you have in it. As you obtain better coins replace the ones that are not so nice and put them into 2x2's. Forget the folder, you cannot see the reverse in those things and it is hard to get the coin in the hole.

Some call a folder when it really is an Album. Then too, some call Albums folders. If your really stating a folder, I suggest you give it to some kid. As already noted spend a few dollars at a coin store or another coin show for an Album. The coins go in easier, you can see both sides, you don't have to press on the coins with your thumb or hit it with a hammer to get it in those slots in a folder. Folders are when you can not see both side of a coin. Albums are when you can see both sides. Note the rear of the slots in a folder. It is usually shinny. This is the glue from the process in making them and it really does little for the longevity of your coins.

I started my collection with folders in 1980, but began the move to albums in 1984. It might bother some to know that, until I started collecting the proofs for all of the denominations, some of the albums were worth more than the coins they contained. But it never bothered me. Not because I knew I would eventually add the proofs, but because the sentimental value of my coins demanded a better home than simple folders.

My Eisenhower dollar album has the "mix" that you fear. I started the collection from circulation and kept them in a folder. The Eisenhower dollar album was one of the first two Dansco albums I got (along with a Kennedy half dollar album). I moved those circulation issues into the album, but now had holes for many NIFC and Proof issues.

After I completed it in 1993, I contemplated doing upgrades but put it off. Now I have no intention doing so; knowing that I have now had those coins for over 25 years is more important to me than the condition or the fact that the album is not all matched. There are two Eisenhower dollars in particular that I could never upgrade.
