About 35 years ago, my mother bought my father a set of war-nickels for his birthday. While skimming thru the RedBook, I noticed there was a DDR on the 1945 P. I've taken some pics of it. Is the reverse of this doubled?....or is it simply me and my wishful-thinking?

Wow...I'd say that's a DDR, because I see a good spread and notching on MONTICELLO, CENTS
Looking in my Cherrypicker's Guide, it sure looks like FS #5c-030.

Enlarging the area in question, it sure seems to match--nice coin!

Thanks again everyone. If I haddn't run out of cents to search, I probably wouldn't even have noticed it. (Never underestimate the powers of a bored Lincoln-cents roll-hunter armed with a 2010 RedBook, and time on his hands.)

The story behind the coin is more valuable than the coin itself.

Readers Digest condensed version...

Dad noticed the set in a coin shop down the street from where mom worked. Mom convinced the owner of the shop to let her buy the set on "layaway". Every two weeks, she gave him $1. 6 months later, she brought the set home and gave it to my father. At the time, mom was working for $1.80 per hour, and dad was attending college under the GI Bill. With 4 kids at home, $2 dollars per month meant that she went without lunch more than once paying for it.

I lost my father back in February... Finding this coin, and listening while my mother recounted the story about it...brought him back for awhile.

If full steps, that's a $5000 coin, right? Not saying you'd ever part with it but it's good to know for insurance.

$5000? I'd love to think so.

The RedBook tells me it's probably worth about $75.

Where did you get $5000 from Pinenut?

My newbie grading skills lead me to believe that all coins are PCGS MS 65.

and have full steps.

Thanks for the link Pinenut. I'm just as much a newbie myself. I had my local dealer look at it today. His best "guess" would be a possible MS63. The photos don't show it, but it has a beautiful rose-ish toning.

At MS63, it's very tempting to send it in for grading. I'm still mulling it over.

And for that reason alone I would keep the coin and the set to pass along to the next generation ...... regardless of the $$$ some may offer.

Share the great story of Mom at $1.80/hour ..... I don't see IMHO how that can be replaced by selling this coin for $75 or so.

Enjoy the coin and the story ..... that's my view.
