Hello all,
I have a small Indian Head One Cent coin that I would like an experts opinion on grading and value if possible.

On the front
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding the Indian Head
at the bottom the date of 1881
I must add here that the Face of the Indian Head looks as if it has been deliberatly defaced with a small X across it?

On the rear
A wrath and sheild surrounding the words ONE CENT.

Any ideas please?

Welcome!

It's a little hard to tell from your pictures, but I would probably grade this as a VF-20, scratched. Which is a shame.

It's a common date - Numismedia says $8 US for VF-20 but with the scratch, I'd cut that in half or more.

I'd also say VF scratched knocks it back to F. It's a common date, but the pre-1887 Indian cents seem to be getting hard to find. I think upward tick in the coin prices will happen for 1880-1886.
