Like many, I try not admit it too much, but every time I go to the supermarket, I have to look in the Coin Star reject bin. I don't know what it is, but I always have a good find or two. Today I found a 1947 P Roosevelt dime in VG 8 and a 1940 P Lincoln Cent in G-4. I can't understand why people don't pick up their rejected change? Am I the only person who does this, or are there others out there?  And what kind of finds have you had? |

I check every coin star I see. To date I have found absolutely nothing, not even a foreign coin.

The TD Bank near me has a free coin machine even for non-members. Obviously, it is quite popular with everyone. I dumped my coins there early today, actually, and got nada. Over the past few years I have found two dozen or so silvers (for some reason it accepts silver halfs but rejects silver dimes/quarters) and literally dozens of foreign coins (again, it accepts Canadians but spits out the rest). Nearly my entire non-US collection consists of coins found here. One time the teller changing the bags even gave me a handful of coins stuck in the reject tube inside the machine. He too was a collector and said he sets aside and buys all the rejects. Nice guy, just wish he still worked there ;)

The local supermarkets all have Coinstar machines. I check them everytime I go grocery shopping. It kills me when I walk in and hear the noise of people dumping their change.  I haven't ever found anything in the return slots but I'll keep looking. Ah, the thrill of the hunt! |

I'm too embarrassed to check the machines. I want to, but worry about the social ostracism I'd receive if I did.
I really liked John1's use of the highlighting. Kind of a letdown when I did it though, a ?9? W?n ?r? ? ?d c?. I was hoping for a Pine tree Shilling or something like that.

The one and only time I ever found anything in a CoinStar reject.....3 Crusty Zincolns.

i dont mind checking them, even though I usually send my 5 year old daughter. found a 70's canadian dime.

I've never even seen a Coinstar machine. I'm told that a Walmart near here has one.....may have to check this out. Instead of dumping at a bank......maybe I could "trek" 50 pounds of coins through the giant Walmart parking lot and carry it inside to the machine ? Guess I'd be the "center of attention" for a bit, doing that..... How many do this regularly ? I know my bank would appreciate me "not" bringing in the coins to them ! But I don't know where a "convenient" Coinstar is.....  Edited by eaglefoot

I didn't even know that there was a reject bin on them. I have never used one.

Check every chance I get, mostly find foreign coins. Indian, canadian, UK.

A little, tip: get to know the cashiers or even the manager of the store whaer the CoinStar is located.. Most of the machines have a jar inside for "foreign" objects that the machine rejects. Maybe they'll let you look through the jar and find something nice that you can buy at face value.
My best find was a 1865 Indian head, but it wasn't CoinStar, but another machine just like it at my bank.

I had to return something to Wal-mart one night and while waiting on line I looked over and saw some coins in the return bin. I walked over and put my hand in, there were so many coins it took me three times to get them all. I put the coins in my pocket and didn't check until I got home. No silver, but got just over five dollars in change. I now check the bin every time I'm in the store, but have not found anything since. |
