do you think this is real and if so what grade would you give it, along with value?

From what I can tell from the pictures it look genuine. I'd grade it at F-15 because of the wear on the eagles breast.

The gouge on the front would keep it from a reputable slab, even if it hadn't been harshly cleaned. This is maybe a $40-50 coin.

I know they are very very rare, but it sounds like I should just walk away.

They're rare, but fairly available; people are turning them because of that relative rarity. This, IMO, is a $200 1879-CC: http://cgi.ebay.com/1879-CC-Morgan-...es_W0QQitemZ250560922332QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item3a569842dc

Note the slab. I'm uncomfortable buying or recommending this one raw.

oh! Nothing to be sorry about! I'll just keep looking, other than feeling bad of a confirmation that I had in my own mind, I'll just keep chugging along.

I have a question, what are the major tipping points to help discover when or if a coin has been cleaned?

In this case, the crud clinging to the tight areas (especially on the reverse), contrasting with the very white fields, is a dead giveaway to me. Coins don't accumulate crud naturally that way.
