I just bought $300 worth of dimes. I know to look for mercury's and dimes before 1965 anything else that's of value? Not trying to put a set together just find some keepers.

Thanks!

I would look for ones which were not intended for circulation (if memory serves me right).

From Mint Sets

1996 W
Keep any eye out for satin finish coins from Philly or Denver made from 2005

From Proof Sets
Any S mintmark dime from 1968 onwards
If you find any S mintmark dimes for 1992 onwards check if they are clad or silver.

Another bit of advice....keep what you like.

The US mint makes normal business strike coins. Proof coins for collectors and mint sets for collectors who want the standard issue coins in pristine condition.

I would suggest that if you have not already done so, is to obtain a copy of the RedBook.

Dime-Hunting!

Reading up on what you want to collect is always a good idea.

Also remember, we like pictures of anything you find that you think is interesting or you have questions about.

Have fun looking thru the coins.

Ah, my man! Following in the footsteps of me and my Treasurenet friend Fistfulladirt, eh? Yeah, I have some advice for you. First, watch out for dirty silver edges. They have a tendency to pop up when you least expect it. Second, look out for the coveted 1983 no mintmark dime. Never found one but they are worth some good money, like, eighty bucks. Good luck bud. - coincrazed

oh hahah I thought he meant anything but p on the 1982.

the only dimes that have silver are the Mercury dimes and roosevelt's up to 1964 right?

For circulation strikes, the last year for silver was 1964 but the mint started making silver proof sets in 1992 (S mint marked coins).

I know people have found modern proof Kennedy half dollars in rolls from banks.

Who knows, you might get lucky and find a coin from broken up silver proof set.
Rest in Peace

Pick up a copy of Cherrypicker's Guide or Strike it Rich with Pocket Change. They will give you a heads up on lots of stuff out there to watch for.

I have posted before that I won't waste my time hunting dimes because I thought it was too low yielding. Well I ate my own words last night when my bank forgot to order my halves this week. I had a 1963-D and a 1964 dime from an NF String & sons $250 box. Not too bad I guess.

I have been doing dimes lately and average 1 silver per 10 rolls.
You find just about anything in dime rolls. Cents, foreign coins, etc. Don't forget to check for silver canadians and canadian varieties, keys etc. One long shot would be the 1965 silver roosevelt
Not positive on this one, but would call it a transitional.

My son found a 2008-P this afternoon. That wouldn't be a big deal, except it finished off his clad Roosevelt collection, 1965-2008. We're not counting the 2009s yet, because I don't think they've been sighted in Michigan.

He's only been collecting for 11 weeks, and he's completed his LMC collection and his clad dimes. Nickels are complete from 1956-2008.
