Although the use of Mexican Pesos (8 Reales) as Trade dollars in China
mostly ended by the 1930's, the US and Mexico did strike several million
Mexican Pesos in 1949 for use in China.

Guys:

I'm sorry I missed checking this thread yesterday. I'm really learning from this exchange.

Archraz. I hadn't thought about bullion flows, but I can see the point. The deep south had only Savannah (Tampa and Mobile were both part of Spanish Florida in the 18th and early 19th century).

Willieboyd2. Thanks for the article. I read this with interest.

thq. Thanks for the link. I was not aware of this coin. I'd still like to know how many and which countries minted silver specifically for the China trade.

Thanks everybody for the lessons. This is a great forum

Thank you for the article Willieboyd2. I have always wondered why they chose the 1898 Peso to restrike for China when China made it very clear back in the 1870's that they preferred the "8 Reales" denomination on the coin over the "peso" denomination despite exact match for silver value. Mexico had tried to convert to the Peso term in 1869 at the Mo and Oa mints and CH, Cn, Do, Ga, Go, Pi, Zs had all joined in by 1872. However due to the complete rejection of the "new" denomination by Asian merchants they all returned to the 8 Reales by 1874.
