Hi,

Is there any other ways than using a scale to see if these 2 cents do not have the same metal content?

They dont look the same at all. One of them looks like the 1982 type.
(zinc planchet)

Thanks,

There might be other ways but a scale or balance would be the fastest easiest way. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. A Popsicle stick or ruler balanced on a pencil will do. Put your 78 on one end and compare it against a known copper or zinc on the other end.

Considering this would have been four years before the zinc cents and as far as I know at least two years before they even started experimenting with new compositions. the chance of it being a zinc planchet is pretty much zero.

There's no chance it's a zinc planchet. That would be like saying you saw a 1959 Mustang. They simply didn't exist and hadn't been invented.

It's far more likely that environmental damage is at play here.

Another way to tell if it's not the composition it's supposed to be is to flip it in the air and listen to it. If it sounds right, then it's most likely the right composition with altered surfaces.

Thanks guys, you were right. Tried with the ruler and the pencil and they weight the same.
