I have been offered this coin and it looks like it has a very weak strike in places. What do you think it should grade

Beautiful hair detail. Is the planchet thinner on the weakly struck side? Looks like an AU detail coin to me. nlp

I agree with AU detail. Strike weakness is I think pretty common with classic cents, along with planchet defects, corrosion, and damage. This one appears to have a rim bump near 1:00 on the reverse but otherwise it looks choice and problem-free. I presume it is in a slab and reflections from the plastic are making it hard to see some of the details.
Looks like it ought to be priced somewhere from $1000 to $2000. These are tough!

What a cool coin! Definitely AU details, but you called it, a weak strike particularly on the obverse.
I still think it's awesome and you should get it. These coins are EXTREMELY rare in this grade.

Reverse is EF or very weakly struck. Obverse is AU. Would be a great coin for one of the old Whitman "Penny Boards" where you can't see the reverse!
I'd pass on it unless the price was in the F/VF range.

the asking price is half of what a AU should cost because of the weakness in strike

yes a little over that. It is in a top TPG holder as problem free also. I just think its a weak strike but still I think the details are AU

Quote: It is in a top TPG holder as problem free also. I didn't realize that and had assumed it was raw. Classic Heads are very pricey so $1200 or so wouldn't be too bad.

Amazingly nice Classic Head with some bad photography so I would bet this coin will look much nicer in hand. Notice the obv stars at 3-5 o'clock, they are out of focus and it doesn't take much slab glare to obscure the true details.

I agree with weak strike. But will disagree with AU details and say it has EF details.
