Is it worth subscribing to the U.S. Mint's program for uncirculated coins? What is the best thing to do? Buy the uncirculated set from the mint, break it apart to fill my albums or buy the coins individually?

That is exactly what I do and many other collectors do the same thing, it is easy that way and the best method if you want all denominations. If you only want a few, such as just the State Quarters, then it is probably cheaper to purchase them individually.

Not trying to hijack anything here, but I have a quick question. If one only wanted State Quarters in proof, would it be best to get proof sets and remove the quarters, or buy the quarters individually?

Thanks.

For the original question, I agree with Biokemist 100%

Usually sets are cheaper than the individual coins. There are rare exceptions, but I think it is the rule for Statehood Quarters.

For proof State Quarters, it would probably be best to purchase the quarter-only set since that is an option for Proof Sets but not the Mint Sets.

I agree with biokemist6 and others
Cheaper to use the Proof, quarter only sets. They made clad proofs for all the years, and the silver proof (quarters only)starting in 2004. I bought and broke open these sets for the the quarter set I am currently working on. Just need 15 more quarters to complete the set. Of course the 1999 and 2001 sets are higher than the other years. I did buy the 1999 silver proofs as seperate coins for $10 each.
