First 2010 cent reported
Posted by Dave

Drum roll, please.

The first report of a 2010 cent to be found in circulation came to me yesterday.

Collectors are eager to see the new Shield design to see how it compares to the line drawing we have been using to illustrate it during the last couple of months.

Bill Gray, a snowbird from Pennsylvania, found the new cent while he and and his wife are enjoying the sunshine and warm weather far to the south of their home state.

He wrote, "I received three 2010 Lincoln cents with shield in change on 1-19-2010 in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico (near Ponce)."

Puerto Rico was an early recipient of the 2009 Lincoln cents also.

Perhaps I will soon hear from collectors in California, Texas, or Florida, which often are the locations of other early sightings.

My thanks go to the snowbird.

I also appreciate his invitation:

"Come on down! Careful of the sun if you haven't seen much of it since September."

Ah, sun. What's that?

I guess Puerto Rico got these first because this was reported on here a few days ago https://goccf.com/t/58698 I don't know how or why they got them before the US but I guess somehow they did. The seller they were talking about sold 120 rolls at $9.95 a piece so it sure was pretty profitable for him

Edgar in San Juan must be an honest guy.

He's making a small fortune selling these at 20X face value so I hope he makes a donation to the Haitian Relief Fund.

I think you always have to be a bit suspicious when ebay ad is not clearly worded (in this case, it looks like that was due to poor english grammer/spelling) and when it is not clear as to how someone is able to get coins which no one else has.

Doesn't this kinda make the upcoming launch event for the 2010 cent a bit pointless?

What I don't understand is why with the qty of coins from 2009 which are stated to be in storage, is why the 2010 cents were released before the launch event.

Would have thought they would have tried to move out all of the old stuff first.

Or are they now using the FILO (first-in, last out) system for sending out coins to banks....

I wouldn't have minded getting a roll,,and even offered Edgar in PR $9.00 for 1 roll. But he must be saving his rolls for those willing to part with a bit more money, because Edgar didn't take my offer.
