I have been reading all day about roll sorting. I even called a bank to ask about rolled coins, but it seems like you have to put in quite a bit of cash to do it. I wanted to start with halves, but maybe that is going way to high. I am really psyched about sorting through rolls, but maybe I need to focus elsewhere. Any ideas on how to start out small and then one day be able to buy a box of halves?

Halves can be tough because many banks do not carry them on a regular basis but they are the best consistent source of silver. Some banks will order them for you but they make you purchase the whole box at $500 while other banks refuse to deal with them at all. It should be easy to purchase 5-10 rolls at a time for any other denomination but your next best chance of silver would be nickels of the 35% WWII variety. It also makes life alot easier if your bank has a counting machine, CoinStars will kill you with the 8.9% fee. Don't expect to make a fortune is silver finds though, CRHing is more of a fun cheap venture because everything you don't want can be cashed back in to start the process again.

but note this if you are trying to make 500$ from roll searching inorder to buy halves, if will take years to find that much silver halves is the easist way, so just get loose halves or single rolls from bank go to different towns?

your best bet is nickels - easy to find older coins and only $100 a box...I enjoy almost every box I open

Try customer rolled dimes(not machine rolled). I average a silver one about every $50 I do. Sometimes you might get lucky and find a whole stash. Nickels/cents are the most affordable, but if you are looking for silver and dont want to do halves, dimes are you friend.
Of course this applies mostly if you are a silver searcher. But you might be surprised by what you find. Remember this hobby takes patience and perseverance. Slowly work your way up and then you can save up enough to get your first box of halves.

Of you have the time, find a 2nd job short term to get the capital, ot maybe donate some plasma for capital, or sell some stuff you don't need, there are always alternatives to getting capital together.
For now until you have the capital, I would plot out a decent weekly trip that will allow you to ask for loose halves and not spend too much on the gas. Even if the tellers do not have halves, be nice, and make them like you. This will always pay off huge in the long run.

Do not get discouraged. Roll hunting is a hit or miss excursion at best. I tend to go to smaller towns and ask if they have any rolls of halves that may have been brought in recently I have gotten as few as 1 50 cent piece and as many as 200 rolls in a day. recently I stopped at all for banks that are on my way home and asked for halves. It was two weeks before Christmas and I was sure that I would score a few rolls that had been dumped. Came home with 19 rolls total that netted me 7 1964's and 12 rolls of 40% halves. On the flip side though, I have made many $300- $600 roll purchases that yielded nothing at all. I have had my bank order boxes for me on several occasions and found nothing worth keeping in them at all. They were all Brinks boxes. Scored four fed boxes once from another bank that had three proofs and several 40%er's in them. So you see my friend, you must unwrap many duds to find the good stuff and most importantly you are not spending the money, you are merely breaking it down into smaller denominations. You will still have just as much as you had before you walked into the bank.

Me and my son started off with $100. We got half of it in pennies and the other half in nickels. I think after 3 months of doing this we still have around $88 and lots of coins for his folders.

I searched some nickel rolls, not looking for silver but looking to complete a set of Jeffersons. Found quite a few hole fillers (in decent shape) and more to stash away if my grandaughter decides to start collecting. I did the same with cents but got very few rolls from the bank. At $2.00 a roll for nickels you can't beat it.

I will admit, without shame...at using my mortgage money to buy a box of halves. My house payment is due on the 15th of each month... My house-payment-money was sitting all alone in my checking account on the 5th... I picked up the box on the 10th... Searched....found....re-rolled...and deposited $498.50 back into the bank on the 12th... 1-64 2-68's...

Thanks for the encouragement. I will just have to work my way up to the halves. I figure as I go to the bank I can ask them if they have anything of interest.

If you don't have the capital for boxes of halves ( 1 Box $500.00) I would suggest starting out with Lincoln Cents and Jefferson nickels. 1 box of cents will cost you $25.00- keep going with cents until you find something real good that you can sell for more capital etc to upgrade to halves down the road etc. Good luck with your searches no matter what way you end up going!

I'm in the same boat as you. I would love to search halves, but can't drop $500 at a time for a box. So I just started with cents, nickels, and dimes. So far after a few weeks I have found a total of 0 silver, 1 Wheat cent, and lots total junk (toy money, washers, Canadan). At least I have gotten a few folders almost filled at face. It's still fun and cheap so I can't see me stopping anytime soon.
