Found this while searching a box last night. (I only hunt nickels for the silver to help feed my wheatie-addiction.) I realize it has "some" value, but I'm clueless as to how much. Is it worth taking to my local dealer and asking for a trade?

In my opinion, no. It's probably worth as mentioned, $1-1.50 I would just hold on to it. It is a cool find nonetheless

Thanks for the info you two. The way I see it, I only paid .05 for it. 3 or 4 more of 'em, and I'll be able to buy a $5 bag of 100 mixed wheats from my dealer.

Cuds are worth more than a buck or two, minimally $5-10 and the value can increase dramatically with large examples. However, trading it to a shop would probably not be a good way to maximize the value. Many dealers do not specialize in errors nor have much interest in them and would probably give you very little if anything for it. If you really want to sell it, I would recommend auctioning it right here on the forum if you do not sell on ebay. I would certainly be willing to bid on it

I Agree with Bio.Last week I saw a nickle on ebay that was quit similar to scottys sold for 16 bucks. There's a nickle on there now with a double Cud and it's up to $36.00.It's a little more dramatic I know but shows you there is an interest in Cuds. http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-1983-P-jef...-R_W0QQitemZ380196855542QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item58857f9ef6

An auction eh? Can I request that all the bidding be done with wheaties? I'll have to think about this. Thanks again for all the responses. Scott

The position of the Cud also has an effect on the value. The majority of Cuds on jeffs are base of bust (especially 83's). Top of head Cuds are much more rare than base of bust. I agree that this example would likely go for at least $15 on ebay, and if you find the right person they might be willing to pay more for it. -XoG

Is the reverse weak on the opposite edge? It looks to smooth to be a Cud? A reverse image might help.

There looks like a corresponding weakness in that area. I would hang onto till you know for sure. You don't get them back after they leave your hands again.
ADDED: The reason I asked was that the color of that area on the obverse look not exactly right. I was thinking solder. But checking again I'm not convinced the weakness is strong enough to confirm my first thought on this thread. So I'm still undecided right now. Sorry.
