MS61: unfortunately downgraded by the gouge in front of Liberty's mouth on the obverse.

I was concerned about the mark there, how much would that downgrade it, 1,2,3 points?

That's too bad. It's relatively a clean looking coin other than the gouge. I'd downgrade this at least 2-3 points. MS61

This being a gouge were metal has been removed is going to effect the coin a lot more than just a ding. The details of the coin looks to be MS-63, but the gouge IMO will drop the grade out of MS and I would grade it at AU-58 damaged.

I also believe that this was caused outside the mint thus, this would be considered damage. Looks to be a circular mark in the middle but, slightly ragged around the edges. I'd like to hear some other opinions on to what may have caused this. How deep is it? Pictures can be deceiving.

A gouge that large would likely leave the coin ungradable. If it did grade, I agree with echizento that it would be AU.

Now if the gouge were deemed to be a planchet flaw or other mint related issue, then this coin looks like it could go MS64 to me.

I agree. The coin has all the accolades of a MS64 coin. It's really clean with a descent strike. A gouge such as this, would indicate it was hit with something and again in my opinion, not a planchet flaw.

I'm sure its post mint damage, thanks to all in helping me realizing the types of damage like scratches dings dents and things effect the grade....the MS guides do not include such things in there desribing the grading process, here's a pic that might imply how deep it is.....It not so deep as to effect the reverse......

Ugrade--1881-S Thanks to all your advise its new territory for me.......

"It not so deep as to effect the reverse" ? Do you mean that there is no huge bulge on the other side? Well, in 'that' case, maybe the grade might not be affected too much after all.
