You did really well. That is one of the few vams that I am able to identify. I can see the tail feather remnants well enough to confirm it.

I think I have one of these, but not nearly as nice as yours. Do you have a grade in mind?

nice coin, but I am concerned about the first pic.... it looks as if it has been whizzed/cleaned. Then other pics show otherwise. If you plan on having it graded, you better make sure those arent hairlines and get a Genuine holder.

Other than that, (and I could be wrong) its a beautiful coin.

just getting home, and gone at first light, when I took these pics, I thought they are polishing lines (notes from examining it earlier than posting) when I get back I will try to look at it again and post some pic's showing the die polishing lines opposed to some scuffs from cleaning....any Ideas to grades please? thanks

It is very interesting to me how three different lighting shots of the obverse will either define or subdue various characteristics of the same coin.

interesting comment Zeewool, I'm still working on how to take good pictures with this camera, and of course the camera angle to capture the true image, its not working yet hehehe, the first pics were in the air tight holder didn't notice the scratches, the second were at night under a yellow light, so they look GOLD toning, the third in mid-day sunlight but not a good angle, its near proof like but the gold one comes closest to showing that.. it's a 6 year old camera but I think one of these days I will figure it out, someday I will get a SLR camera, but for now its fun to learn........

I'm not saying that there is anything at all wrong with 'any' of the pictures.

In this case, if there were only one picture of the obverse, all people may say MS-62. All people looking at a different picture may say cleaned, whizzed, altered surfaces. Yet if only one other picture of the obverse is viewed, the same people may scratch their heads and say that your lighting is off.

Pictures, despite how the lighting or the angle of the shot, are deceiving through no intentional attempts by the photographer to deceive.

Asking opinions for grades on a coin based on pictures could be far more subjective than I earlier perceived.

did you weigh this coin yet? It seems to have some die runoff up between 11 and 2 o'clock. I really haven't seen many Morgans where the rims run off like that.

I would have to say MS 64 sure may be higher with a weight post it here!

Very much so, to the point that it's desirable to post multiple pics under differing lighting as an aid in grading. With this coin as a prime example, only the second ("yellow") set is accurate enough (but only to my own sensibilities, not everyone's) to make the determination between circulated and uncirculated.

I have spent countless hours looking at Morgan dollars and grading them, especially mint state examples. Learning to grade requires a through understanding of the technical aspects and prime focal areas of a coin. I I find that looking for luster breaks with a coin in hand is best especially in natural light.

Taking accurate pictures of coin is difficult.

I have been fortunate to have had two examples of VAM 41C to compare to. One was MS 62 and the other MS 64 both graded by PCGS.
