How does one tell which is which? I have two Lincolns where the reverse is fine, details clear...but the obverse only has Lincoln's bust normal, as all lettering is either missing or extremely light. So, what do I have...a soft strike or a die adjustment strike and is there any value to these?

Pics would help, but I would think that either one of those would affect both sides of the coin. It may be Struck Through Grease.

A soft strike or die adjustment strike are basically the same thing but you cannot have that on only one side of the coin. If the reverse is fine but you are missing some obverse lettering, then you probably have a Struck Through Grease strike. Of course, pics would help for a definitive diagnosis.

Biokemist is right.

You probably have a coin that was struck through a layer of grease. It is not a weak strike or an adjustment strike.

Thanks,
Bill

After reading the above advice...I do believe I have coins struck thru a layer of grease. I will get those pics up later this week. Thank you for all the advice.

Bennie - what years on those 2 Lincolns? I find them quite often with a weak obv and strong rev in 69 D.

I cannot tell what the dates are on either, as all the lettering is too faint or nonexistent...especially the dates, but the bust is fine.

Thank you for the pics and help. My coins have a perfectly normal Bust of Lincoln but that is all one can see except for some faint letters...the reverse is normal as far as I can tell.
