I'm thinking let it "naturalize" in controlled atmosphere the have it graded? Serious answers.......PLEASE!I plead with you for your input as at the end of the day I will weigh all the opinions and the coin will either be freed from its confines or remain subdued in the plastic wonderland of lost enjoyment. Only you,!!... can make this decision ( ized plagiarism from Smokey the bear w/arm extended and finger pointing).

Crack it out, let it tone naturally if that is what you want, and then send it into ANACS for a true grade.

If you're not happy with it being slabbed and not happy with the "genuine" only label without a true grade, then by all means free that puppy from it's prison! :P
That's a nice looking coin, btw. :)

Without a doubt crack it out. According to PCGS's numerical code,"98", the coin has damage done to it. From the photo's , no obvious scrtach bruise, dent is seen- actually this is an attractive coin. Luster looks mirror like, concern of dipping, polished-it doesn't look to be. I once purchased a PCGS genuine Carson City Morgan which they say was altered at a coin show. I bought the coin at an discounted price. The coin to me was gorgeous, for the life of me I could not see what PCGS was looking at. I carcked the coin out, brought it to a trusted dealer I know, put it under the microscope, he too could find nothing wrong. I sent it to ICG which I happen to like and it came back an MS 64.

Personally I think PCGS is way over rated. I think ANACS grades coins more accurately.

NGC would also give it a details grade.

you people are too awesome! I am going to do it, any advice on how? I have been over this coin with a fine tooth comb, high power magnifying glass and placed it under a microscope. I cannot for the life of me find a flaw, at least nothing that would disqualify it as not being gradable.

Not sure about the 98 code, but PCGS will not grade a cleaned coin. This example has certainly been cleaned. ANACS or NGC will give a cleaned coin a details grade and note the cleaning.

i forget the link, but if you go to youtube.com and put in "cracking a pcgs holder", this guy does a great job with a chain cutter without doing damage to the coin, I've done it and it does work, but only on pcgs holders.

Quote: I'm thinking let it "naturalize" in controlled atmosphere the have it graded? "Naturalize" of course meaning returning the coin to it's natural habitat of tacobellicus napkinicus.

I see no reason not to crack it out but I also don't see any reason to resubmit it either because a problem coin is a problem coin no matter if it retones or what ever. Now if it were a key date or something then I would say leave it in the slab because authenticity is more important than grade but with a common coin that is in a problem holder I see no reason to leave it in the slab if you have somewhere else it could be

I am not a plastic collector. All coins are not supposed to be inside those silly plastic holders with tags above them. break it out and enjoy the coin unless your the type that likes to window shop.

Except for the coins in my registry sets I crack all of my other coins out of the holders when I get them. I have a set of Franklin half dollars in a Dansco album that over half of the coins were cracked out of the holders by PCGS and NGC.
