It's a beautiful coin. It will go MS64 for sure. I believe the contact marks obverse and minor abrasions on the cheek, will limit a 65 grade though.

I have only 2 slabbed coins to compare with, 1 1886 MS64 and 1 1879-S MS65 so I use the "guilt by association" method of grading...thanks

Easy MS-64, even with the few contanct marks I think it could slide to MS-65. Beautiful coin.

If graded by PCGS I think it will grade MS 64. MS 64 obverse. MS 65 reverse. There is a field scrape just below M on the obverse which keeps it from grading MS 65.

It's got a shot at 65; I'd want to see the cheek in-hand to be any more sure. Keep in mind, the value of this coin triples between 64 and 65, so a TPG will consider carefully before creating that kind of wealth.

Dave, being totally oblivious of this sort of thing, I just have to ask: Are TPGs so biased (or selfish, or jealous or whatever you want to call it) that they take into consideration value when they place a grade on such a coin?

Absolutely! Try to get an 1880-O in an UNC holder.

I would give the 78-CC an MS64 grade. It has few marks, but for a CC coin I would expect a more solid strike for an MS65 grade. Another thing when comparing other year and mm coins in holders, the TPGs take into account dates and mm's when assessing the coin. Just take a look at Metalman's example of the 1880-O in another thread. Some years and mints produced "hammered" strikes, while others produced mushy strikes. Comparing this one to an 1879-S and 1886 would be apples to oranges.

But it's still a beaut!

Thanks Dave, I would expect them to take all of those things into consideration, but what I was asking about specifically was this:

zeewool,

Yes they will definitely give those high $ margin grades much more scrutiny and are more prone to err on the conservative side. This preserves the rarity of the grade and perpetuates the perception that the TPG's are strict in their interpretation. It also keeps the speculators playing the "crack-out" game. For a candidate coin to earn the grade it must be a solid candidate ... no sliders.

You won't find this policy written anywhere in PCGS, NGC or ANACS. But it's evident through experience.

I'd say the '78-CC has a good shot at an MS-65 grade from NGC or PCGS. I've seen (and owned!) MS-65 slabbed Morgans from these TPGs that seemed less deserving than this coin. I suspect that in-hand even those minor field marks look less severe. It's a nice one!

I'd send it in if it were mine. As mentioned, the potential sale price goes way up if it makes MS-65 and the cost to find out seems like a worthwhile gamble.

How much do PCGS and NGC determine there "cost" for grading,
by the value of the item or
a flat rate cost per item/ how quick you want it?, I do understand they don't want to many in the top ranks because to many available would drop the prices they claim to proclaim and protect.
and of course...how much is it, can you send it in yourself?
would a member get a better grade than an unknown individual?thanks
