So my normal Craigslist scanning turned up a guy selling a handful of ASEs at melt value, and a few "from change" silvers he had found, again at melt. His ASEs were all in flips and I weighed the first one of the six, and I found 31.19g, not far away enough to make me worry, given my little $9 scale and the fact that my scale was quite cold from the drive over. The rest I glanced at and we worked a deal.

So upon taking them home and really examining, I am getting worried I got a some fakes. They weight 31.3-31.4, noticeably above their expected. I just weighed a bunch of BU Morgans and ranged from 26.63 -21.78, just to verify the accuracy of my scale. My only other ASE shows 31.17. The diameter is right. The ring test is hard to tell, as I have found ASEs and 90% sound different. They are not magnetic. All marked 1997. The appearance scares me the most. Casting bubbles? Or actual possible wear? If it was wear, they would be underweight, right?

What do you all think?

I'm by far no expert but to me the weights you mentioned seemed within tolerance. I guess we should wait for the experts.

I would not get too hung up on a difference in weight of a tenth of a gram or two. The only other practical metal close enough to the density of silver is lead and even a novice collector should be able to discern a lead coin from a silver one.

Wear does not necessarily make them underweight (the silver shifts around), but certainly won't make them overweight. That said, I think you're withing tolerance.

Here are the specs from the U.S. Mint's website. If the diameter and thickness are correct and the weight is within 0.2 grams or so, don't worry. It looks fine to me.

Thanks. I was unaware of any incidences of overweight bullion eagles. I guess these have seen just a touch of sliding around and were a tad overweight to begin with.
