Oh, something's up, but I'll bite. Eagle's breast is smooth, Hairlines are pretty worn. That leads me toward a VF-20. However, the nice rim, the very clear lettering would suggest some features in at least a 50 range. Soooo... I'm stumped, but I say VF-20 or some sort of fake/plating/etc. is at hand.
(by the way, I don't think I'm good at this, just trying to spur discussion 'cuz I think the story will be interesting)

I was thinking the same thing, the cheek is looks pretty good, the fields don't really have much in them, all the obverse letters are pretty free from dings,,,,and the hair is pretty well gone, the reverse is interesting too, the wreath and letters n rim is really clean but the breast and tallons almost are gone? gotta love it......Dr Jeckle is at hand somehow lol....

This is a classic New Orleans mint weak strike. This is actually a mint state coin, I'll say MS-63.

I may be new here, and I don't have the slightest idea about how to grade coins, but I consider those black marks on the obverse to be more than just a MAJOR distraction, they ruin the coin in my opinion. I'll say Non-Gradable, Genuine.

I agree with echizento. This coin has a weak strike but tons of original luster. MS63 sounds about right

As noted, this could be a mint state coin with weak strike. However, the photos don't show the luster clearly enough for me to be sure. The darker color in the obverse field below the chin and the reverse field between wreath and wings could be the result of light friction, suggesting a high AU grade. IMO, even if it is a mint state coin the weak strike would limit it to MS-63 maximum. The toning spots are negatives, bringing the grade down another point. So, I'd say it could grade in the AU-55 to MS-62 range.
The flat area over the ear displays vertical striations which are remnants of the original blank planchet surface. These marks would be obliterated if the strike were stronger or if the coin had been significantly worn. The fact that they are visible indicates this dollar is mint state or close to it.

Ah, weak strike fits. That's now the coolest thing I've learned today.

in either case, would anybody buy something like that? It's hardly an attractive piece,,,,I have to wonder if it would be given grade..let the saga continue....

Was it Struck Through Grease or something. The flat spots are in the center of the coin on both sides.Other than the center, the rest of the coin looks Uncirculated. The spots kinda kill it for me

112 years is a long time, not all of the coins come out unscathed I do agree though the spots are distracting.
the weakness is definitely through the center of the coin, they also encompass the deepest parts of the die which is consistent with a weak strike, the silver never filled the lowest recesses in fact the coin was struck so weakly that some of the original surface of the planchet remained undisturbed as was noted above.
its not a beautiful coin by many different standards, but it is a rarity.
I took the time to join up with anacs and will against my own philosophy be sending the coin off this next week for slabbing.
I will post back the results within a month I hope.
