Looks phony to me. Seems like the second strike would have smashed it a lot more elongated? But I'm not an error expert. It would be interesting to see what Mike Diamond would say about this one?
I'd say real. Struck between the obv die and a struck coin still in the collar. The lesser elongation compared to coop's coin is because the coin was work hardened from the first strike while coops coin was struck on an annealed planchet.
A bunch of these errors came out of the Denver Mint between 1968 and 1974, mostly nickels and a lesser number of dimes. The lack of expansion on the second strike has nothing to do with work hardening. The second strike is a bit weak, for reasons that are not clear.
