I bought this coin on Teletrade years ago, just because it looked really cool and the price seemed reasonable. I've since heard that classic Russian coins have gone way up in price and I wonder if anyone can tell me what it might be worth now. Any opinions?

Jaobler- well, my Krause only goes up to EF, which is listed as being $45. So your MS63 is probably REALLY unusual. I think that an expert in Russian coins would no more than we average Krause-wielders.

Beautiful coin. Nothing listed for grades above EF, but I would guess in the range of at least $200.

Beautiful 1/2 rouble! It looks like it has some nice original surfaces on it. Krause has been worthless with Russian materials since around 2002. The market bubbled out in 2007/2008, dipped, and is now on the rebound (IMHO). Nice slabbed material like this typically brings in generous premiums. I would guess that this piece would bring $400 on ebay but there is alot of room for error. All it takes is for 2 stubborn collectors to get into a bidding war, and it is easily $700 coin.

Can any other forum members weigh in on the current value?

400? I reckon at least 600+ without much difficulty even in this difficult economy. It's not that easy to find UNC poltina.

It's silver by the way, not copper.

According to Krause, 1.8 million 1839 Poltinas were minted. The 1845 Poltina, which had a mintage of just over 2 million, sold for $2760 in the January 2009 New York Heritage Auction. The 1845 was graded MS65: http://www.ha.com/3004*22323.

As wcg pointed out, auction prices can increase dramatically if you have 2 stubborn bidders. At the same time, auction prices are a good measure to tell what the market currently is.

The piece you have is beautiful. The toning gives the coin great eye appeal!

Sincerely,
