For those of you who are active members of the RCNA, I just love this publication, and the latest issue starting on page 32 has an article on Joseph Olivia Patenaude.
Apparently this guy was stamping 1 dollar canadian coins in the 40's and 50's with his intials.
has anyone read this article, or does anyone have a coin with these initals stamped on them?
Do they go for a premium?
Thanks

The 60th edition of Charltons has a section of JOP dollars in the varities section at the back of the book if you have that edition. I think he was a Jeweler.

From past auctions an EF45 @ $600.00 to a MS64 @ $1400.00

And it will only go up according to the year & grade.......

This is one phenomenon I could never understand in the Numismatic World of collecting. How can collectors be thrilled about owning a coin that someone 50 years ago "illegally" defaced. Not only did J.O.P. commit a crime by doing this, but now his defaced coins sell at a premium?
HMMMMMMMMMMMMM, makes one wonder? Maybe I'll try stamping my initial G.J.P. on mintstate 1948 $ilver dollars and see what happens 50 years from now in trends!

That was a very interesting article. I wondered if it was going to be mentioned here. I've not seen one in hand myself, but I've never exactly looked very hard either. Counter stamps aren't much use when it becomes impossible to attribute them, but once the history uncovers itself, at least a little, the story and the coin become appealing to many.

Me too, I'm apawled (sic) that these coins demand a premium, and I agree with Glenzy and others, its defacing the coin plain and simple.
In my eyes the guy ruined it.

Hi guys. I am only trying to wrap my head around this, not judging.

These coins are worth a premium because some guy decided to stamp his initials on them? Paying a premium for these seems to set a very bad example. If I decide to stamp my initials on 1000 dimes, will that make them worth more in 50 years? Should we all stamp our initials on coins? Will that make all of them worth more?

OK, maybe I am judging a little, but what makes these coins worth a premium?

Dollar,

Charlton 60th Edition P.462 has a an entire page dedicated to the JOP counterstamped dollars. Beginning in 1935, until 1954... apparently only a single 1948 has been recorded. Beware of fakes.

Question: Why does the coin command a premium?

Answer: Because someone is willing to pay for it.
