I would appreciate some advice from all the experts out there.

I recently bought some silver dollars from a dealer recently and was concerned about all the fake stuff going around. He is a reputable dealer, but even dealers can get fooled.

I know there was a good disucssion on this forum a while back.

I assume all the coins I bought were real since after examining them carefully, I noticed there was less wear in between and around the letters on the inscription on the reverse of the coin (i.e. GEORGIVS V REX ....). This outer area around the lettering has a frostier look than the more worn areas around the King's head.

Is this a good way to detect counterfeits or have the found a way to fake that as well ?

I am only aware of 45,46,47 and 48 counterfeit Canadian dollars. The 2 Chinese are relatively easy to spot on the slag planchetts but get a little trickier on the silver or silver clad planchetts. The Lebanese(sp?) and Isreali (sp?)fake dollars are a little better, but the Rev. Legend will give them away. Pay close attention to the D of Canada. There is a tell tale sign there. Please do not attempt to use wear or lack of wear or lustre in the fields or legend.

If possible post pictures on the forum before buying or placing a bid on an auction item. Getting opinions from others on certain coins that are suspect has saved me a couple of times from being separarted from my money.

The 1949 dollar is a known forgery..

The 1939 dollar was sold from Sinapore as a Reproduction..

Thanks for correcting me. I forgot those 2. :-) The 1939 has only been rated as suspect. The 1949 is again being debated as unsure, probable Die Deterioration with a clash. Regards

D23: how do those two in the pics weigh in ?
I think most fakes will fail the weight test ...

The 49 is reported at correct weight(23.33), no weight for the 39.
