i don't know nothing about this series of coins but in my guide it says there are 75-100 known pieces and it is worth a lot of money I think the odds are exceptionally high that this is a fake and the guy you bought the coin from is not a stand up guy

If he's a stand-up guy, try your luck at getting back your $270. That one's got wonky written all over it, and worth a few bucks at most (imo). Here's a detail from the date area on a certified example, taken from a Heritage auction. The digits look a bit different to me.

Have you weighed it?
I'm thinking a stand-up comic is more likely.

Here is another Heritage MS-64 that sold for $74,000 certified by PGS. The date is different looking than your Heritage above too. Note the top part of the '1' on both Heritages. Adds to the confusion for me....

Your coin is counterfeit....no doubt.....both 1's show the improper bases as per a known copy of the fakes.......

@laconic, I compared a few others and saw those differences in the digits too. Honestly, I'm not sure if this is due to die state, or different reverse dies. But those are certified coins after all--and your coin raises numerous other flags to my eyes. Perhaps others here can better express what is simply my innate sense on this one...

@coinsrfun I would love to see a picture of the known fake if you have it. @DVCollector, thanks for the critiques with explanations @chequer, love the stand up comic line! To me, this is like buying a lottery ticket. I knew the odds were not great but the fun is in the determining....

Found an article by the financial post that shows a known fake and it has the same bases for the '1' as the real Heritage ones. . I do not own one but I would be scared to by a 1948 dollar or any coin over $500 unless it was certified. There are some REAL good fakes out there sadly.

A fake. The easiest way to tell is the leaf at the inside four o'clock position on the reverse is never complete. It's botched and it's the same on all this series of fakes.

tamarin, that is a good marker....it may be hindered however when/if the coin has been tumbled to a G/VG appearance. :-)

Sorry coinsrfun. When you initially said Big Tree Coin Factory, I thought you were being sarcastic but it apparently does exist (wonder how they came up with that name). Thanks for the comparison picture!
Tamarin thats a good tell to look for in fakes, I never knew about the 4:00 leaf. Something to watch out for in buying a more obtainable 1932.
