Hello,
So, I was wondering if anyone out there would consider your coin collection or coin collecting in general an accomplishment, what do you think?
Thanks, Rich

Interesting question, I never thought of coin collecting in terms of being an accomplishment.
For me, it is just a hobby that I enjoy and the forum allows me contact other collectors from around the world. I want to keep it a form of relaxation for me, so I will not get hung up if I never accomplish anything by doing it.
Will be interesting to hear what others have to say on the subject.

I totally agree with kena. I think that there is a sort of accomplishment that can accompany a good coin collection though: the knowledge and experiences generated through the practice and study of this great hobby.

I didn't until I started buying Dansco's. Getting that last hole filled certainly gives you a feeling of pride and accomplishment. But then it's time for....upgrades!

I also agree with Kena. I enjoy the hobby aspect of it. When I stumble upon a stack of silver halves, I sell about half of them to fund purchases that are a little more pricey for my Whitmans - due to the lack of liklihood I'll pull very nice Buffs, Washingtons, Walkers, etc. from rolls.
The forums are a fantastic addition to the enjoyment of the hobby as well.

Quote: The forums are a fantastic addition to the enjoyment of the hobby as well. I totally agree. It seems that many find this to be a rather solitary hobby since there is always the fear that one's coin collection may be at risk if discussing it or showing it off in person. The internet forums make it very easy to show our coins & knowledge without fear. So these forms enhance the enjoyment of the hobby greatly.

One of the things I do is buy bag lots of coins at auctions. Just for the thrill of the hunt. Anytime I find something new to add to my collection, it is an "accomplishment". But it's also just a hobby, something I enjoy doing. Something I can do in my liesure.

Yes, it is an accomplishment for me when I complete one of my coin collecting projects.

I'm not one to hunt down the rarities and key dates to "complete a set". I do, however, feel a sense of accomplishment whenever I track down and finally obtain something from my wantlist of world coins.

once I place this pesky last coin in my dansco 7070 album I will think that part of my collection was quite an accomplishment especially in the time I took to finish it in the condition the coins are in (especially considering the about a year and a half I didn't do anything with it at all). The rest of my collection isn't much to be bragging about even though they are still nice coins but nothing that was hard to build by any means, now when I get my VAM's attributed and my registry set goes back to #1 I may brag a little bit for a couple days

I don't think I've ever felt any sort of accomplishment in this hobby since there really is no end. Sort of like riding a train with tracks that go from one end of the Earth to the other and then back on a second track. I've been collecting coin for well over 60 years. My problem may be that as soon as I fill an Album, I start another one just like that one. Then #1 gets the best coins, #2 getsthe next best, #3 the next and on and on and on and on and on and on ........ For example now have 12 completed sets of Mercury dimes and thinking to start one more would be 13 and none to be not the best of numbers. With virtually over 100 Whitman Classic Albums and mostly all full, it's only time to start more. There is just no end. Difficult to feel that sence of accomplishment. Now if I collected Beanie Babies, I know the end is almost here.

Collecting coins is truly an accomplishment in at least two fronts. First it means you are saving money . Second we often do not consider the number of hours we have spent doing this. I suspect I have spent more than one year of my life (24 hour days for 365 days) doing something related to the hobby (which for me is also a business). That means that 1/40th of my life has been associated with coin collecting. Since sleep represents a little less than 1/3 of my life that does not leave much left over for everyday living. Coin collecting takes a big part of my "free" time (no such thing). I find it enjoyable and yes it is satisfying to accomplish a goal whether that is completing a set or finding a great coin in a roll. Sincerely, John Leckrone
