Hello all!
Over the weekend, looking through some stuff I stumbled across a 09S Indian that was marked BAD on the 2x2. I know the person who ownes this coin very well. So I asked if I could take it to get some pictures of for a Counterfeit Detection site I am working on. He said sure, no prob... So I brought it back, looked under the scope and the S looks the way it should, IMO. That only thing I can think of that it would be bad is a 8 shaped into a 9... which is definately a possibility.
It is a GOOD, no liberty.

He is the most knowledgable coin person I have known, so I am sure if he marked it as bad, it is. But when I looked at it under a scope... here is what I saw:

09s-Indian...-Good-Or-Bad??

09s-Indian...-Good-Or-Bad??

Whatcha think?

Wow! If that is a fake, they did a good job. Even altering a "key" date 1908-S into a 1909-S would be hard to justify because the counterfeiter could actually end up ruining his "investment" for a 1908-S.

Mint mark looks good and has the same wear and colors as the surrounding high points.

This is why I would only buy key dates like this slabbed by the top TPG's. Submit it and see what happens, then let us know.

Well this is not my coin to submit. I just wanted to get some pics of some counterfeits for my website.
My thinking was the same if they did alter a 08-S. There are no scratches on the surface around the last digit like there are with the 1940's Lincoln cents modified into a teen.

I am personally not a fan of slabs. I just make sure I know the key before I buy it. I will only buy a key in person, not across ebay or anything like that. I also only buy from people I know... ones that will take a coin back if there is a problem. Pretty hard to do sometimes, but I've got 4 dealers like that. One of them will take any coin back (within a reasonable amount of time) even if I just decide I do not want it... since he gives me very good deals and could make more money sellling it to someone else. I've yet to return one though.

So... not sure what the deal may be with this coin. After looking at it through the scope, it was too late to get ahold of him so I will try here shortly and see if I can find out why he thought this was bad.

I just got off the phone with him. He said he was not 100% certain it was bad, he said the S looked a little different to him compared to another one that he had (probably a higher grade) so he labeled it as BAD. I told him after looking at it through the scope and comparing it to PCGS Counterfeit Guide pics, it looks like a good piece to me. He said "Boy I hope you're right"

So I am just going to bring it with me to a club meeting this Thursday. Speaking of which it's the main event for our club. There is going to be a very nice dinner and a guest speaker, Leon (owner of Silvertowne, out of Winchester Indiana (anyone familiar with them?). Hopefully will be a good time.

I ended up taking this coin in on a trade. He told me any time if there is a problem with it to bring it back to him. So I will probably send it in to see what happens.
