Looking back at my Ike Dansco for the first time in several months, I was struck by the fact that I somehow had a 73 proof in the 73 hole. This was not good since I had thought I had completed the Ike set. So, here is the replacement----now the set is complete!

Here's a couple of my most recent acquisitions. '73 and '74 silver proofs still in their mint coffins. The '74 has developed quite a tone around the rim. The box the '73 came in looks brand-new. Someone took care of it. Picked up both from ebay for a good price.

On the subject of Ikes, Littleton Coin started selling their "Big Sky Hoard" coins today. Too bad they don't have any '71 or '72 coins in there. Hard to to find nice examples of those years. '71 and '72 P&D is all I need to complete my Ike collection. There's a coin show in a couple of weeks, hopefully I can find what I'm looking for there.

you won't find this bad boy in the Big Sky Hoard. MS-68 (one of two I just picked up... this was an Ike Group piece once belonging in the world's top Ike Set)

Not a bad problem to have.

AWESOME 72-D cc99999...I know one of the Ike Group Members was selling most of his very high-grade IKES, at a fraction of book...some incredible coins...pretty much once-in-lifetime buying opp...James Sego has the other best high-end coins...some amazing IKES. My dream set will include MS70 IKES...If I win the loot, of course.
Side Note, here's the link to the Littleton BIG SKY Hoard...nothing special at all, yet...pretty dissapointing so far...

@ilikeikes. did you see the 72 Type III I posted on page 50? It is a talon head. Beautiful, beautiful coin. I heard they had an MS-69 72-S at the FUN Show plus they made 2 MS-68+s at the PCGS booth (or better said, 2 Silver Ikes made MS-68+). Yes, Brian Vaile is selling several of the best Ikes you'll ever find. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford an FEV in one of the earliest known dies states. The coin grades MS-64 but it's a great looking 64. No gouges or hits... just some hairlines on the front- which may just be annealing chatter.

Found this 72 D Ike at a local antique mall this
past weekend with the Mrs.
Very nicely Clashed Die in various places.
Nice clash just below the wing and very slight
"UDU" (Upside Down U)

a friend of mine sent me a 71-D in a PCGS MS-63 holder. We both think PCGS blew it big time on this coin as it looks every bit as good as a couple of the MS-66's I have. Seems to me PCGS was thrown off that this coin was struck on a proof planchet. The coin is visibly ridiculous, nary a scratch, and so many cartwheels you'd think you were in a gymnasium. I'm going to take it with me to a coin club meeting tonight and get some blind grades from the dealers. I'll see if I can post photos later.

@Stewart

Is there any way you could tell me where to look for the clashes? I am new to this. I have spent quite some time looking at your pics trying to see what you say is there. The best I can dome up with is that it looks like there is a faint "Y" shape under the "E" on the front that my mind sees as corresponding to the leaves/branch extending out from the eagle's right claw.

Please help me learn what I am missing. I recently discovered some by-year-labeled rolls of these that I had stored back in the day they were circulating and need to know what to look for.

Thanks

jprine,
Congratulations on the completion of the set. Nice looking coin
to finish the set with.

Mach1,
Couple of very nice looking coins there

1971 and 1972 Ike's are my absolute favorite years, Just due
to amount of chaos that was going on at the Mint at that time
trying to get the Ike's minted correctly. Not only the hard work
of just getting the presses to mint them correctly but the political
chaos also involved at the time, Fierce Eagle Versus Friendly Eagle.
Leads to the many different varieties that we are finding today

cc99999,
1972 S MS68 Nothing more be said by me about such a beautiful
specimen other than
It is good to here about the MS69's being made by PCGS
I think they may be finally getting their heads wrapped around
the Eisenhower dollar Series. There has been so much controversy
with PCGS where Ike's are concerned over the years. Hopefully
that time is coming to an end and we can just get back to objective
grading and attributing of coins.
It has always amazed me when a coin has to go through no less than
three Professional Coin Graders who have chosen this field to make
their living, And a coin comes through where something like
a Circulation Strike coin accidentally minted on a Proof Planchet
and the hair on at least one of the Graders neck does not stand
up and they recognize that they have something Very Different in their
hands. They just pass it through with an MS Grade.
Like I said above I hope this time is coming to an end.

Clash 1. Is a raised line between the fifth feather from the front
of the wing that runs to the top leaf of the olive branch.
I am not 100% sure, but I think it is a part of a Moon Line die clash
which comes from the outer edge of Eisenhower's head on the Obverse.
If you look at the crater just below the Eagles talons you will
see a line running through it. That is a part of a Moon Line die clash.
The clash by the wing seems to be pretty much in a line with the
clash in the crater which leads me to believe it is all part
of the same clash. Not sure though, I have not seen one that strong
under the wing tip before. Hopefully one of our other Ike Nuts
will chime in on this they may have seen this before.
Here is a link to an Ike Group Article about the Moon Lin die clash
http://www.ikegroup.org/ML.htm

Clash 2. The UDU "Upside Down U" is on the obverse, Just
to the right of the "E" in WE There is a raised area running from
in front of the "E" and curves around the top of the "E"
That is a clash from the first "U" in UNUM
Here is a link to an Ike Group Article on this specific die clash
http://www.ikegroup.org/UDU.htm

Clash 3. Talon Head, On Eisenhower's Temple, this one is a
Double Talon Head. Sorry I do not have a close up of it.
Quote from Ike Group
"The Talon image is created by a nubbin on the reverse die that clashes with Ike's temple on the obverse die. Possibly unique to modern coins, this reverse die nubbin (which on the struck coin is the deep declivity between the Eagle's legs) rises above the field on the die so it can reach into Ike's temple and make an image there when the dies clash."

I hope this helps

Chuck, Thank You,
And Congratulations on the 1971S MS66 PCGS
I can't wait to see the pictures I bet she's a stunner
71 S's in any kind of high grade are a very hard thing to find
When someone on here can go through 400 Blue packs and only
find a couple of decent enough specimens to buy.
Things are getting interesting.
