If you were to purchase any one of the new commemoratives but could only buy in one condition, what you choose?

In looking through coin price sheets it looks like it might be better to purchase in Unc as sometimes there are fewer minted in Unc and sometimes the values rise higher by percentage above cost.

I would buy both if I could but can't so what do you think?

I am going to buy UNC's, then watch to see if the proofs go down in after market. You never know what will happen, but I agree if you look at the "coin price sheets" there a lot of commemorative dollars that have done just that, UNC goes up and proofs go down.

well its all according to what you like. myself I like the look of the proofs over the uncirculated versions. If you want lower mintage then yes the UNC usually are lower mintage because most collectors like the Proof versions because the proofs were all ways minted for collectors and I guess it just stuck that proof=collector coins. I guess what I am trying to say it is what ever appeals to you and it may differ between each design

I know it's sometimes a "fine line", but you should choose "what you like to collect", and not put TOO much thought into "future value"......I know that plays a VERY alluring part sometimes though, as it should in general.
But then it also depends on what kind of "collecting" you're doing.
If you are only acquiring coins to sell them for a profit in the near future.......then go for the "value" side of it.
And on the contrary, if you want "what you like the most" and what you find the most beautiful and satisfied by, in your collection....then you have to go with what "appeals" to you the most !

Thanks eaglefoot: Nice saying from J.Wayne. Makes this morning feel better.
If you can efford both, by Un. and Proof. If money is an object, buy the one "YOU" like!

In general, I like the proofs. They represent the beauty and craftsmanship of what minting coins can be if you don't need to produce millions and billions of them for commerce.

I agree with the others that I try not to think TOO MUCH about future value. I collect coins because I enjoy it.

I always think of the joke about the farmer who wins the lottery. When asked what he would do with all the money, he replied "I guess I'll just keep farming until it's all gone".

Some of the Modern Commemorative Dollars may look 'better' to some in
their Uncirculated form, or at least interesting in their own right.

The 2008 Bald Eagle I like better Uncirculated, as the obverse reminds
me of the Type 1 Standing Liberty quarter reverse (low Eagle, no stars).
I've always liked the T1 SLQ reverse much more than the T2 version.

The 2009 Lincoln, I like the Proof better, but the Uncirculated is
at least interesting because it's more like what a business strike
Lincoln Silver Dollar would have looked like.

I collect both and I happen to like the looks of most of the UNC better then the proofs. Some of the UNC sell for way more then the proof because of low mintage numbers.
