I heard from a dealer that a coin is graded based off of 60% of the obverse grade and 40% of the reverse grade. Added together they get the overall grade. Is this true for the major TPG's?

If the obverse looks to be MS-63: 60%= 37.8
and reverse looks to be MS-60: 40%= 24.0

Net Grade: 61.8

I think that statement is way to generalized. TPG grading is very subjective, and depends on the coin and the graders.

The coin grading firms grade differently. They take the grade of the front, the grade of the back and the lesser of the two grades is what the coin is graded at. Example...

Obverse of coin grades ms 64. Reverse grades ms 63. Coin is graded ms 63.

The only thing I have seen a 60/40 split on with regards to coins is that the obverse of the coin (face) is more important than the reverse of the coin (tails) so when buying a coin make sure the obverse is the better looking side. Clear as mud?
