So from time to time I take a look at the PCGS price guide to see what years/mm's exist for coins, and might click on the coin number to see other info. such as composition, size, weight. Just too lazy to open a book sometimes.
Their website has been "warning" for a while that the coin information is no longer being updated. (Not talking about the price guide itself).
So today, a subscription required to see that stuff. $9.95 A MONTH! They supposedly are offering more information than what was provided before for free, but methinks that's a little steep.

PCGS's price guide is exaggerated anyway. No big loss.

The price guide is still there, for free. And it is a handy resource for seeing list of years (and mints) for any given coin. Which years have proofs, for example.
But I'm not talking about the price guide...but the information behind the price guide.

Welcome to the new, user-pays Internet. $9.95 a month is a bargain, compared to other reference sites that require a subscription. NumisMaster wants $12.95/month or $79.95/year to access their price guides for world coins and US coins and notes, while CoinArchives (which used to be free) now charges $600/year to access their auction database. Personally, if I'm paying money for something, I'd want something physical in return - like a book, or a DVD. If you pay cash for website access and the website folds, you've got nothing to show for your money.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

The "old" Coinfacts is still there, free and unchanged.

I believe the PCGS price guide is a "good" source of knowledge for their own coins and also feel it is over priced verses reality.I also feel the company is over rated and was helped to that position by themselves, and the slab lovers who have to have the label...... I would not be surprised when the day comes that it, like most else, will cost something. I am not a dealer and the prices for the sites stated above, to me are insane, again, I am not a dealer and maybe they benefit from this information, I just feel like some others, I like to place my hands on most things I pay for or cost me a fee. I again will admit, it is nice of the multi-million dollar company to allow us collectors to view the price guide and do not charge, yet!

The market will determine whether or not $9.95/month is justified, just as the market determines who the top grading company is and what they can, and cannot, charge for their services.
Supply and demand set the prices, not PCGS.

Quote: The "old" Coinfacts is still there, free and unchanged. Where? I was able to see the free coinFact page only if I cleared my cookies from PCGS. Then the "subscribe" page comes right back up after looking at an item. Now here's what I'm getting trying to go to the price guide, so maybe even that might be going away: Quote:
Subscribe to PCGS CoinFacts for the Expanded PCGS Price Guide - Prices for Every Coin in Every Grade
You have entered a subscription area on PCGS.com. To access the Expanded PCGS Price, which gives you the current average price for every PCGS-graded U.S. coin in every grade and much more, you will need to subscribe to PCGS CoinFacts.com, the ultimate single source of information on U.S. coins. A subscription costs just $9.95 per month - far less than you'd pay elsewhere for a fraction of the information.
* Current average prices for EVERY PCGS-graded coin * Prices across ALL grades * PCGS-graded coins only
( edit ) http://www.coinfacts.com/ has the old information. Previously I was getting to this through the price guide.

Quote: The market will determine whether or not $9.95/month is justified Well, of course. And I'm keeping my $10/month in my pocket.
