It's a nice looking coin. I compared it to my 1912S. IMO it looks legit and the positioning of the mintmark looks ok. I've attached a 'scope & obverse shot of mine for reference should you wish to compare. Good luck at winning should you wish to proceed!

Quite the underrated coin - fewer were minted than the 1916-D Mercury - yet the Merc goes for 10 times as much in grade. This one looks pretty good, as does the seller's record. That said, this seller's Feedback does not include a coin sale within a third of the value of this one, at least as far back as ebay will link auctions. I don't know if that's a red flag or not. I'm thinking it makes VF30. That's $500+ in a PCGS slab and I'd be a nervous puppy bidding that kind of scratch on a raw coin. But that's just me. Don't go nuts and hit top-of-market - these aren't that uncommon on the market. Either way, if you take it home I strongly advise getting it to PCGS, for investment value.

Cheetah thanks for the scope photos and info.
Dave I too am leery of purchasing a key date coin raw and have been looking for a slabbed VF 12-S for some time with the eye appeal I like. So far no luck.
I too feel this is a VF coin and if I decide to jump in the fray I will not bid top of market just in case.

Isn't the "S" MM bigger on the ebay coin than on Cheetah's?

Did you get it? It looks totally legit to me. I'd say VF30 possibly VF35. It's a nice coin. The VF20 PCGS is also a good looking coin with the darkness bringing out the devices which looks nice.

Vermont,
I did not make a play on it. I asked the seller to send me a closeup of the mint mark which he never did. I was just too scared to pull the trigger on it. However it went for a little over $300 which was a great price.

Jim - Just a friendly FYI.. I got the one shown off of ebay in a bag of 40 Liberties I paid very little for. When I eventually got to scanning through the lot, each one on the scope to grade, it was then I discovered this one with the "S" mint mark. I couldn't believe it! Even though what I have is low grade, it was essentially a "freebie" that was a nice surprise. I took it to two different old timer dealers in the area to have them confirm what I have... When I told them how I got it, they were astounded.

Quote: I asked the seller to send me a closeup of the mint mark which he never did. This is where you have to use your best judgement. If you ask a seller a question and he/she does not get back to you in a timely manner (within 24 hours), it's best to forget him/her and the auction. You are protecting yourself
