I would like to acquire a protective plastic/acrylic capsule for an Azteca Veinte Pesos gold coin. The coin's edge contains lettering which I would like to be visible in the capsule. The capsule should be able to be reopened, but I'd like to find one that is not likely to pop open in the event it is dropped. I tend to prefer round capsules, but square or rectangular shapes could work as well. Any and all suggestions (and best source(s)) for a high quality capsule as described would be appreciated.

Thanks much,
Ged

I don't know the dimensions of the coin you are speaking of but you might try these:

Thanks Joker. That is an interesting holder. It appears to be flexible, that is less rigid than an air tite, is that correct? I would like a solid holder if possible. The coin's diameter is 27.5mm.

I dont think they are very flimsy from what I have heard from others that have used them they are quite rigid.

I use them for Morgans. They're quite strong, more than capable of keeping the coin undamaged should you drop it on a hardwood floor (don't ask me how I know that). I don't think there's one which will fit your coin properly, though - the closest are probably the Large Cent (a little large) or the $10 Gold (a little small).

Yes, the size is a concern. I'll take a close look at the sizes of the two coins you mentioned Dave. My thanks to you Joker, and you Dave, for your suggestions and comments.

I have a short list now of four holders: CoinEdge (28mm size is closest), Air Tite (28mm), Kointain (28.2mm), and Intercept Shield (which has a holder of exactly the right size, 27.5mm). The only one of these I've used is Air Tite, but it wouldn't be possible to see the coin edge if a ring was used. Any further comments/comparisons of these four will be helpful.

Thanks much,
Ged

You could do as I did here and you could now see all three sides of all coins.
Just kidding of course.

Hi coinundrum. Thanks for the input. I have come to the conclusion that the CoinEdge holders are a good choice. I'm trying to take inventory now so I can get an order in. I'm glad to hear they work well with your Libertads.

Speaking of Libertads, you will appreciate a recent experience I had. I was visiting a city and decided to visit as many of the local coin shops as possible. Among other things, I was interested in locating 1 ozt Libertads at a good price. I walked into a particular shop and asked if they had any Libertads. The proprietor said, "I think I have a couple of those in the safe." I began to peruse what he had on display while he went on a hunt for them. In two or three minutes he produced two Libertads and placed them on the counter before me. He said, "These are $1.35 over spot." You can imagine my surprise when one of the Libertads turned out to be an uncirculated 1998 (mintage of 67,000 coins), sometimes referred to as "the king of Libertads". The other coin was a 2001 in BU condition. I paid him $18.23 each, bought some ASE's and left very happy and thankful.
