If I'm not mistaken I would say this is not an authentic 1879-CC Morgan

Caveat: I am by no means an expert in Morgans. Not at all.

I pulled up an image of an 1879-CC Morgan from The Coin Page image database: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-4867.html

I cropped each photo for a side by side comparison of each top-left quadrant. In my opinion, the ebay coin appears to differ from the genuine by the following:

- "G" in God appears to differ
- "D" in God appears to differ
- Hook of Eagle Beak appears to differ

Below please see the side by side comparison.

As I said, I am no expert. My two-cents.

Thanks.

Hmmmm, I'm thinking this is real. I see what everyone is pointing out, but I think it's merely wear on the coin. As far as the beak, it seems to match the example posted on CCF below in our coin image gallery. The only concern to me is the color and the look of a casting. Having said that, I think the whole ad is either legit, or this guy is good. His description of buying it in 2002 or 2003 matches up with purchases he made during that time period to different coin stores. Can't find the exact purchase of course without more legwork, but I think they are ok.

CCF example

The mint mark in the CCF example doesn't look like the MM on his coin.JMO.

I don't understand how someone could research someone's purchases from the past from different coin stores... am I missing something?

I don't know the exact purchases that they made. What I'm saying is if you look at the feedback on ebay, you will see that purchases were made to different coin stores during the period that the seller was referring to in his description. Most scam artists just aren't that bright and their listing wouldn't read that "fluid" for lack of a better word.

I'm still thinking this is real, but hey, I'm not a Morgan expert by any stretch. I just don't see the differences standing out, and maybe that's because the images aren't coins of the same grade.....

I guess we'll never know unless we accept someone's opinion based on the listing photos and comparisons.
