Hi folks. I have a coin that caught my attention while going through my collection for possible varities. Here is a link to a high res (4.5 MB) pic of the obverse of the coin.

Note the LIBERTY (especially the BERTY) and 1,4 & 3 of 1943. I thought it might be FS-05-1943P-106 (029), CONECA: 6-O-I (reference Whitman CherryPickers Guide page 310). It looks close but is different. Any opinions? I'll try to attach a pic.

Here goes: 1943-P-War-Nickel-Variety?

Here's a link to a pic of two 1943-P nickels side by side. The one in question is on the right, the '3' is really different:

Hmmm....that is interesting snook. They do look different. As for the variety, all I can say is that I don't believe that it's a 1943/2. But that's the only 1943-P variety that I'm aware of. This would be a good one for wheezydog....he's our resident Jefferson expert :)

To me, it looks simply damaged. As if there was damage to the lower half of LIBERTY and the date and then it saw considerable circulation since . It appears as if the lower half was smashed down by some means and this makes it look spread. I can say, I think I see a bit of a ledge remaining especially on T Y and the 1 in 1943.
As far as varieties goes, I only know of one other being the doubled eye that is dramatic and valuable having doubling, then there is the overdate 1943 over 2 and I think there are several repunched mint marks for this mint and year. This link for others have no images. http://www.conecaonline.org/content...9421943.html

Heck I have a hard enough time finding doubled dies on BU coins. Of course, I could be wrong. This is a good one for the error and variety experts. I have a few of the lesser known doubled dies in the Jefferson series but I mostly focus on the major varieties that are more well known. I would go nuts trying to be an analyst of all the hundreds of die varieties. I also think life is too short for me to try.

I don't have the Cherrypickers reference to try and see what you are comparing it to, but I will agree that the lower half of the letters and the date have been damaged and then worn after the damage occurred.
