Found another 1964D at work today. Another good find, silver is silver!!
On another note, I went to the bank today to ask the vault manager to order me more dimes. As she was placing the order I was talking to a nice girl teller ;) that happened to be just sitting there. She asked me, "are you looking for silver?" I told her I was looking for anything interesting, not necessarily silver. She then asked me if I have ever seen a blue dollar bill. I looked at her and I said, "huh?" She pulled 5 of them out and said look. I noticed she had 5 1$ silver certificates. So I asked her if I could buy them she said okay. I ended up with 1 mint 1957, 3 avg wear 1957, and one fairly abused 1935. Btw, can someone tell me why one of them has a star on it where the serial number is? Thanks.

Nice finds Colles! I had a customer pay with 2 crisp silver certificates for their steak dinner. Post those in the US Paper Money and Banknotes part of this forum. And the star makes it a star note. They are more valuable , but I don't know much about paper money so go ask those guys.

The Star designates that this particular note was printed
to replace the original note which had the exact same serial #
As paper money wears out and reaches the point that it is no longer usable banks turn them in to the fed. and then they get
inventoried then destroyed. They then have to print up replacements for all of those notes.

That's strange that star notes are more valuable. It seems as if the non star notes should be worth more because they are older and have lasted longer.

Star notes are only produced if the original note is damaged or defective before it leaves the mint. Once in circulation the number doesn't get replaced if damaged. So, if you get a star note it means the mint screwed it up and had to make another. Its not often they make a mistake, so those are worth a premium.
Dimes today...
2 boxes.
5,000 clad dimes. Not a single silver or even a canadian. SIGH. maybe I need to take a break from dimes.

I did though go to other banks and asked if I could see their mutilated bill pile (where the girl had these silver certificates) One teller told me "Ohh, the ones with the red or blue seal on them?" I said yeah they are pretty cool and I was wondering if you have any. He said "I had a 100 bill with a red seal, but I sent it to the fed to get destroyed...... -_-' "
Why oh why do I bother to ask, I'm just going to upset myself when I hear what they do with them. Next time maybe.

I was going through my fifth box of (Canadian) dimes last night when I found something I've been expecting recently: a silver Roosevelt dime (1957). A box of dimes where I live usually has about 30-40 US dimes in it, so I found my first silver one after picking out about 200 US dimes. Not a bad ratio! In comparison, I've found 10 Canadian silver dimes in those same boxes. |

my luck is starting to look up! found a 62 rosie on the ground right after I got a great deal on some .999 rounds. I managed to find TWO 1995 grateful dead commerative rounds for only 35 bucks a piece  Happy Hunting Everyone! ~David |

$900 in cwr between 2 banks today gave up two silver rosies and the usual two dozen Canadians.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

Purchased a bag of $500 in dimes yesterday.
Results:
2 silver Roosies - '64D and '63D.
1 silver Canadian - 1968
1 5p United Kingdom
three non-silver Canadian
one small piece of hardware.
Had a good time looking.

My sister is town this weekend and she brought me 2 boxes of dimes. 1 box each from I different city along the way. 2 boxes produced 6 silver.....1x1959. 1x1960. 1x1966 2x1967 and my most exciting find.......my first American silver dime. 1964 no mint mark. After seeing hundreds of American dimes in my hunting, nice to find a silver one! Cheers all! |
