I have just sorted out an accumulation of 10¢ coins (several year's worth; maybe about 2kg) with a view to making up some complete sets.
Pleasing result as I have at least 3 each of the lowest mintage years.

However a problem...1981 were minted in Canberra (about 65%) and Wales. McDonald says for Wales "Obverse text is closer to the rim than on 1981 Canberra issues". I have 14 of this year, all apparently identical and I calculated the chance of all 14 being Canberra as 1 in 371 (unlikely).
So I did some searching and other catelogue says nothing; only web site I can find that mentions this is Museum Victoria which says "There are no markings on the coins to differentiate these two issues".

Anyone have any information? I am inclined to think they are identical and McDonald has made a mistake.

cheers
Jeff

This one was taken from a RAM (Royal Australian Mint) roll and should be the Canberra coin. Note the detail in the hairlines, the "bushy" eyebrows and the distance the text is from the rim.

This one was taken from a RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) roll and should be the Wales example. Not e the hairlines being weak, the eyebrow lines non-existant and the text closer to the rim.

Thanks Nancy and Sandy. Detailed information and some good photographs make all the difference.
The differences here are more subtle than I expected -I was expecting something similar to 1999, where the difference in the small and large head design is obvious at first glance.

Jeff,
The differences are subtle and more easy to see when the image is enlarged. If you look at the text you'll also find that the Wales coin shows 'fishtailing" to the bottom of the text much like Perth coins show. Cheers.
