What would you give this one? I just bought it, and have just 1 more slot to fill in the half dollar section of the Dansco 7070.

I think this will go 58...maybe even higher. The reality is that it was probably dipped at some point though.

I think your assessment is correct on grade and most likely it has been dipped.

Looks to me like the right obverse field especially has had a fair amount of friction which has dulled the luster. Liberty's head, the eagle talons, the olive branch, and the arrowheads and feathers also seem to show slight wear.

I'd be a bit more conservative and assign an AU-55 grade. Dipping is likely but I don't see any hairlines or other damage. Overall eye appeal is good IMO.

What do you suppose is that curving line on the shield below LIBERTY? Could it be a "struck-through" feature, possibly from a piece of string or wire?

That's the 64 dollar question on this one. It almost looks raised rather than incuse. It almost follows the curvature of the eagle's beak, but to be from a damaged die, a coin would have had to flip over and be struck again in order to impart that damage to that area. It'll be interesting to see when it gets here...just what that is. I paid EF money for it, and think it'll be a nice representative for the first seated half hole in the Dansco.

I'd like to see them revise that album to include all 7 seated varieties, but they've shortened it to make the set easier to "complete". By the same token, I'm glad they omitted the 3 dollar and 4 dollar gold coins. I'd never complete the set on my pay.

I agree with AU-58 and dipped. Still a nice looking coin.

The only place I would question wear is the top of the head. Is that just weak strike?
