Yes The oil cans are valuable as well. If you must open them, use a can opener on the bottom end and one of those kind that take the end off smooth, not the old fashioned kind that cut into the top. I used to sell these in the 90's in antique shops and got a minimum of 15 bucks for them and some are better than others. Yours look to be in super condition.

You might also be better off using something the spread the slit on top to be a bit wider. Have one end low and the other high and gently slide the coins out one at a time and then neatly bend the slots back.

Quote:OMG! can I have a Morgan dollar and the Indian Head cent book? Quote: can I have a barber half then? You can have nothing, but you surely can be glad for captainkurt and his find. While it's not against the rules to ask for something for free, I don't see it as very courteous to a relatively new member.

My grandfather owned a service station years ago also and he had some of those oil cans like that. I think it was a promotional thing the oil companies sent to the service stations, they didn't have oil in them they had the slot to put coins in. The tin bottom of those things can do some nasty things to coins if they haven't been stored correctly. I know he had one that was full of Lincoln cents and they were all pretty nasty

turn cans upside down, use a butter knife to move the coins around until they start to fall out. Trust me, it works. The cans won't be dented or you won't be cutting them apart anymore than they already are. Jeez, didn't you guys ever have piggy banks?

THE CANS HAVE VALUE! DO NOT cut them or damage them in any way. To get coins out take a 3 by 5 card and cut it so it fits in the slit. It will take longer to get the coins out but you should be able to get some money on ebay for them as well. Glad the collection turned up! Sincerely, John Leckrone

Wow - that 23 looks nice!
Curious what the other key dates look like. Any chance he left you a 1916?

Curious what the other key dates look like. Any chance he left you a 1916? Those were the only coins in the SLQ Folder. I do see evidence of a cherry pick on the 24D & 26S. You can see where the folder is punched through in the picture below. I took another picture of the date of the 1917S and I can not see the date at all.
