Are there any other markers on a 1864 2 cent piece besides the motto that will tell me whether it is a small motto or large motto? If you don't have both types to compare how would you know?

Here is a LM
two other indicators for the Sm are the berry under "IN" has a straight stalk.
The leaf stalk under "T" is curved not straight.

hope this helps there are others but these are the two easiest to see
even in a worn coin like the one shown

Also you can tell the difference by the ribbon ends. The LM has straighter ribbon ends and the SM has a more curved ribbon ends. This is always the 1st area I focus on since many are very worn. The left ribbon end is curved more than the right on the SM.,so its the left side that is a telltale sign.

Another good indicator is the outermost leaf below GOD. On the large motto above note how small that leaf is compared to the same leaf on the small motto. This is visible even if the motto isn't.

Another way to tell is the left foot of the first T in TRUST almost touches the fold in the ribbon on the small motto. On the large motto it is well away from the fold.

On the small motto the T's in the motto are the same in width as they are in height. On the large motto they are about a third taller than their width.

The next to the lowest cluster of leaves on the left has three outer leaves. On the large motto the outermost leaf is very small, the next is larger, and the lowest leaf is even larger. On the small motto the outermost leaf is large an the other two are almost equal in size with the middle leaf extending out unusually far.

Five feathers on the indside.
b. On the right feathers:
