Can all these wheat pennies really be unsearched? http://cgi.ebay.com/Unsearched-Seal...cmdZViewItemHas anybody bought an unsearched lot from ebay? Some I look at say unsearched but will also say the dates range from 1930 to 1959 and I wonder how they know that if they didnt search....others are in sealed bank rolls. The link above is from a sealed bank bag...is there anyway they can open...search....and re-seal?

RUN As Fast As You Can!!!!
This ploy has been happening for years and you can rest assured they have been searched for key dates. Some people say they just wouldnt have the time to search all them penny's well how hard is it to search a pound at a time while you are putting them in a bag to ship out, not very hard and they may throw a semi key date in there for every 100 bags they sell to keep the feedback looking good but chances are 100/1 that you will be the one that gets the semi ket date that may be worth 100 bucks
Edited to Add: I just looked at the auction and it says it is a sealed bank bag so I may be wrong on this one because I have never heard of a sealed bank bag before so I'm not sure if they can be resealed with say a simple 5.00 bag sealer (like you see on TV with them sealing the bag with water in it and holding it up to show it doesn't leak) or how they are made. So I will tell you to wait for a reply from someone that may know the answers to these questions before listening to my advice above

Short, sweet and simple. No such thing as unsearched bags of wheats on ebay. Possibly unsearched by the seller, but searched by someone. Better chances of finding the winng Powerball ticket laying on the parking lot than finding a true key coin. Still the possibility remains for minor doubled dies, repunched mintmarks and the like.

I did an experiment a few years back. I bought 10 1/2lb lots of coins on ebay from different dealers (about 75 coins for a half pound) Most were a little under weight not over. I also bough a bulk lot (100lbs)privately from someone on RCC. The last thing I did was go to one of my local coin shops and persuade the owner to sell me 5lbs from his wheatie tray. Without exception the ebay lots contained mostly post 1930 coins with one or two very low grade teens thrown in. At between 9 and 14 cents a coin not a good deal. The private deal got me a very good mix of dates with even a few indians. At 6 cents a coin a good deal The Coin shop was by far the best with mostly twenties and thirties with a few mid grade teens. At just under 8 cents a coin. I for one will never by a bulk lot of wheaties from ebay again if it says unsearched. How are they all wheaties unless some one has sorted them.... I have tried to get more from my local coin shop but he has refused to sell me any more bulk lots.

The above advice regarding ":unsearched" coins is very good.
No such thing.
Advertising ploy.

I do have a lot of holes to fill for the teens, 20's and 30's, so maybe I will fill a few....Like I said, for $3.95 it is worth a shot.

Since they are in rolls they were definatly searched by someone somewhere. Nowadays its very hard to come acrosse many wheaties from the 30's 20's and teens

I sold groups of unsearched wheats on ebay for awhile, and I think I did it right. I sold them for $9.99 per pound, I always included extra and never ever took anything out of the coins...I shipped them without doing anything more than weighing them. But I stopped. There's just too many crooks giving this business a bad name. Plus most people had unrealistic expectations...there were more wheats minted in the 30's 40's & 50's than in the teens and 20's combined, so why does everyone think they'll get mostly teens or semi keys? The deck was stacked against me, so I decided it was not worthwhile. I still handle large quantities of wheats. I bought 4 bags the other day (5k coins per bag) and owned them for about 15 minutes. The last large group I had was 17 bags and I owned them for a few hours. With turnover like that there's no reason for me to spoon feed them out for a few extra bucks and risk damaging feedback. Frankly, I don't think there's any such thing as an unsearched bag of circ wheats anymore. Even if it's been in some fellows garage for 30 years...they were probably looked through 30 years ago. The only thing to be found now would be some varities that weren't known or cared about 30 years ago. tradernick
