Is the blob a die chip, die crack, zinc zit or something else? And what's that smooth arc connecting the 9 and 8 ?

Wow, that's kinda creepy. I'd lean towards die chip, but can't rule out your "zit" theory. Better wait for the pros.

Did you poke the zit to see if it's an air bubble? The arc could be a die chip.

xshift, I poked the zit and fortunately it didn't squirt anything on me. It's solid.

solid is good! Could be an extra large chip - but I'd definitely wait on more opinions on that one

To me it appears as plating erosion. A split happens in the plating and the zinc underneath starts working raising the plating. Eventually this will stop and the area will start to sink because of the missing material under that area. It happens usually around the mint mark area and on the outside edge of the devices. But all it takes is a poke from a pin to start the action happening. Sometimes it takes years to see the difference. But I've heard of it being accelerated with an acid to make a copper Hershey's kiss shell in a short time. Not something you would want to have on a variety that you might buy. It just gets worse with time. https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...Fell_Off.jpg

It's a die chip. The edges are too sharp and too irregular to be a blister or a bulge pushed up by subsurface corrosion.

What about the surrounding edges of the blob/chip that has discolored from the Zinc that has started to corrode beneath the blob in question

alas , jasper unless the magnified dirt/gunk around and in a (small spot in the middle) of the die chip is just that ... perhaps then not any zinc rot?

Thanks all. I would imagine it's a big one as far as die chips go.

Because the die chip stands higher than any nearby feature, it experienced increased wear, enough to penetrate the copper plating.
