Compared to a non scratched 1877 IHC of the same grade and time of auction, the value is cut pretty deep. But, just like any coin on the market...it's worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it.

IMO that scratch is not that distracting. You have a decently circulated coin there so the scratch is not as distracting as it would be on an XF-MS coin. I am not sure what percentage discount should be applied to this coin as a result of that scratch. The presence of verdigris/corrosion would be much more distracting to me than that scratch would be. I guess if that's the only problem this coin has and if it has good surfaces and I could get it at a 20-25% discount I would consider buying it. Lets see what the IHC experts have to say.

On a key date coin like this I would want the coin to be perfectly problem free to get any where close to market value. Although not the worst I have seen the scratch does go through the bust which carries a heavier weight than a scratch in the fields... I would want close to a 50% discount from a problem free of the same grade. I would also want this date certified, too much money at stake to chance it.

Definitely not unattractive. I would have no doubts about this piece being genuine as the reverse does show the weakness in the center of the coin. VG with a scratch... Personally, I would try to stick in the $400-500 range.
Edit: maybe $500 is a little too steep for me, but it depends how bad someone wants it!

What scratch? That is my way of saying it is not as distracting as it could be, however, the coin may look completely different in hand.

I'll say right up--this is a coin that should be slabbed first, value assigned afterwards. I'm not saying it's not genuine, but there may be other issue here...such as corrosion/cleaning/poss. tooling. Until proven otherwise, anything is possible--on the key IHC date. (imo) possible issues aside, it looks F12 to me.

I agree with DV - looks like it's been cleaned to me. The combination of the cleaning and the scratch are a big drop in value, but then again if that's the last one you need to complete the collection and you are on a budget, I've certainly seen worse coins.

The scratch will effect the grade and value a bit. What does the reverse look like? I would grade it just from the obverse as VG-10.

$500 to $600. Fine details: cleaned & scratched. (this is assuming there are no big surprises on the reverse)
