...some common date Buffalo nickels? Went into my local dealer this morning to re-up on some supplies and he had a "Blowout" bucket half full of a bunch of common date Buffaloes from VG to MAYBE fine condition. All were $1.50 each. I only have a couple of Buffaloes in my collection and intend to start collect them one day. Just wonder if $1.50 each would be a good "starter" set price. I almost grabbed the whole bucket out of impulse, but thought I'd check with you guys first. Whatcha think? |

Seems pretty reasonable from a dealer. Numismedia shows them at $1 to $1.25 depending on year and condition.

Thanks for the input. Kind of scary that his "blowout" price equals the Numimedia prices. I might pick up a couple samples on my home and post 'em, then see what you think based on condition. I did see a lot of "S" mintmarks, if that makes a difference.

If you go to a show, you will usually see such "blowout" buckets of readable date Buffs from around $0.50 to $1 each. Your dealer may also give a discount if you are buying several.....

It will definitely depend on what the year and mm combos are. My dealer usually has them for $1 each but I have never looked through them.

I think it could be a good way to get started, but it does depend on the dates and conditions.
Even though they are priced $1.50 each, treat each one as an individual purchase. Take a price list with you and judge each coin of its own value. You might end up getting a good price on a group of better coins, while leaving the "overpriced" common ones behind.
As said above, you might get an even better deal when you a group of them.

Yeah, he's pretty good about about "volume discounts", and from what I could see the majority looked at least VG, we'll see. I didn't think $1.50 sounded too bad, but I don't know the Buffaloes. Like I said, I haven't started to collect them yet, but I want to.
I'm sure once I get into them, I will want to upgrade, but for starters.....
I'll grab a few and post them tonight and see what you think. I'm not very confident in my grading skills, yet.
Plus, at $1.50 how much could I possibly lose? - LOL

There's a shop around here that want.75 for a DATELESS, with acid residue.

I think I'd have to draw the line at dateless, much less acid residue. I see it as a cheap way to get kick started. I've always liked them, just seems like there is always something else on my list before I get to them. I get sidetracked really easy. I go shopping for Lincolns and come home with ASE's. Or, I'm looking for a particular Washington and come home with an Indian head. How does that happen? |

It is reasonable as long as they are full 4 digit dates, some mint marks, and not all from the mid-late 30s.

I agree with the group consensus above .... Spend some research time to know the basics of value for Buffalo's ..... then buy a few and post them here. Say you buy 10 ..... cost you $15.00 ..... geepers .... you can easily spend more than that on a 12 pack of cold-adult beverage tomorrow.  Show us what you end up with. Sorry about the delay, worked longer than I thought I would. Had to actually take lunch at 7PM to get there before he closed! Yup, I work nights. Anyway, picked out these 4 for $5. Big spender! I don't think it was too bad. Some of the mintmarks may be hard to read, so clockwise: 1928P, 1930S, 1935S, 1936D. Sorry, I broke the mid to late 30's rule, but these were the best of the bunch. Of the remainder, the dates were legible but really worn flat - wasn't sure if they were worth it.   |

they look cleaned to me, no expert here tho. my dealer sells them for 75¢ common full dates
