Are they a different year? Where are they from? This is two different notes.

Yen is Japanese but I know nothing about the currency being the same numbers.They must be fairly old as a Yen doesn't go very far now.

Can't find them in the catalog. Because they all have the same serial number perhaps they are play money or temple notes or something like that.

The design is listed in Pick as the 1946 series, P# 85 in my old 1986 edition. Banknotes.com page. The note's were cheap back in 1986, 75¢ in Unc. They were only issued for two years from 1946 until the introduction of the brass 1 yen coin in 1948.

As for the duplicate serial numbers, there are two explanations I can think of. First, they could be fakes. Second, it could be a printing error, where a numeral failed to click over.

I wonder if these note are actually errors. If you need to see if they're real, find a current Japanese note and compare the paper. The paper quality should be the same (both from mulberry bark.)

Here's also a quick guide from the BOJ. These notes are still valid, being >=1 Yen.
