Can I safely call this a die break? I just want to make sure this isn't some kind of PMD experiment. Looks like a break.

If so, this one of the biggest I've seen so far in my short collecting career. Assuming this is a die break, how would this rank on a scale of 1 to 10? I'm sure you veterans have seen bigger.

I believe that's called a "die chip" I don't know what the difference is between a die chip and a die break but would like to know. As far as a die chip rank, maybe a 3 or 4?

Wow, that's still in the die chip category! And a 3 or 4! There must be some real monsters out there! This is the biggest one I've seen so far.

I asked on another post awhile back about the difference between a die chip and a die break and never got an answer. So, I'm curious as to what defines each as well. Thanks for your feedback. I have way too much to learn.

WE all do. I'm no pro, so my last post was just IMHO. I am waiting to see what the pros have to say.

I've been collecting Lincolns for 41 yrs and varieties/errors for 15 yrs and have seen several breaks in the 1st bay (I call them breaks) and that is about the largest I've seen. Some people call them wasp nests. I think it's pretty cool looking. Nice find.

Thanks hasfam! I especially like the "15 years/about the largest I've seen" part! That really makes me feel a lot better about it. I mean I liked it to begin with, but now I really like it! It floored me when I seen it. I like "wasp nest" - makes sense!

Would something like this fetch cud-like money? Not intending to sell it, I just like somewhat assigning a value to them.

Die crack: A irregular crack in the die that appears like a die scratch but not straight.
Die chip: Is where a piece of the die is chipping away from an area next to a device. A part of the die is now missing leaving a raised area on the rim.
Die break is where the area of the crack/chipping continue to spread even larger and longer.
Retained Cud: A piece of the die splits off but still is involved in striking coins. The devices may no longer match up exactly as before the break started to separate.
Cud: Is where a piece of the die has fallen off the die and with that area missing the reverse no longer strikes opposite the Cud.

If I missed something, some one will add to my post.

I'm leaning toward break. The chip seems to have 3 tiers to it.

Thanks needgames4lyfe!

Scooby, definitely a die chip, I have a series of 2008 LMC's that go from when the die chip started to when it ended up looking just like yours. it is pretty neat to be able to see when a chip started and what it progressed to. Good find. Try to see if you can find more from that die so you can see how it progressed.

jamesd, I'd like to see that, maybe you could start a new thread showing the progression. I'm sure a lot of newcomers would be surprised to know to look for such things.

So Coop, what do you call this one? And on a scale of 1-10 where would you rank it?

die chip. Maybe a 8 out of 10. After they get worse than these the die is retired. Value? I'd say minamal. But each collector decides what he wishes in his collection. Would I keep it? Probably as an educational piece. I have many tubes I place educational pieces in so I have them ready for new photos to take when a question comes up.

Die chip it is! Thanks for the awesome links, coop.

So, I guess it's not worth any more than the thrill of discovery, but I'm definitely hanging on to it. It is the biggest one I've found or seen!

The one you have on Lincoln's noggin is a pretty good one, too. That's cool. I like finding stuff like this.
