I have stared at the hundreds of photos at coppercoins and I'm still a little confused on the "light spread" and "some notching" concept. Some of the notches and spreads are obvious, some are not.

At first glance of this coin, the motto caught my attention. But, the more I looked at it, the more I started leaning toward Die Deterioration. But then, it seemed that UNITED STATES and AMERICA just seemed a little thicker than usual but DOESN'T look like Die Deterioration.

Now, I don't know if I've just stared at this coin too long, or if something is really going on here. Any thoughts?

Have you compared them to others of the same date/mm and condition?, that's what I do. I myself have two coins I came across that looks like the devices are thick. I'm still comparing them to others and can't make up my mind if they are DD's or not.

Yeah, I always try to do that first. There is nothing to compare this one to. So, I'll sit it down, go on to a few other coins then every time I come back to this one, I think I see minor separation on some of the characters. Like the ON of ONE, and in ERIC of AMERICA and most of UNITED.

I misstated in my original post that I didn't understand the concept. I get the concept, I guess I just haven't trained my eyes to know what I'm looking for.

Spread pertains to the degree of doubling on a doubled die. This coin isn't a doubled die as there is no evidence of it and therefore has no spread.

Thanks,
Bill

Oh Yeah:-) :-) I think Chuck has some shots of a 2004 DDR and a 2004 D DDR. Look at the E PLURIBUS UNUM shots to see a "light spread".

have Fun,
Bill
