Hi Chuck,
In MS63 and on an Early Die State coin, that doubled die runs between 50 and 75 bucks. If we back it down gradewise, and consider the green on it, It would be about 15 to 20 tops. Still a real nice coin as an example of a nice
DDO. In higher grades, this one surpasses the 1974 D
DDO in value. The doubling is essentially all you need to establish the ID of this coin. Die markers are not needed when the coin has dings and such. The doubling on your coin indicates that your identification of the coin is correct.
It is
CONECA 1972 DDO-OO1 (1-0-II+V)
or FS-50-1972-101 (
CherryPickers' Guide)
I wish I knew what the green stuff was. The coin should be preserved somehow. You might try to see if straight acetone might get rid of the green on the coin. I don't advocate cleaning as a rule but this coin could benefit if the green can be removed. You wouldn't wipe or polish the coin and the acetone is harmless to the rest of the coin and its surface. Don't use nail polish remover as that is only 3% acetone or so if it is an acetone based nail polish remover. If you try to use straight acetone, you have to use it in a very well ventilated location. If you happen to have birds as pets, use the acetone outside and not in the house.
I hope this helps.
Bill
